Danube - Lake Constance - Cycle Path
The landscape between the Danube to the North and Lake Constance to the South is full of soft, rolling hills and expansive plateaus, with historic little towns and impressive Baroque monasteries and churches. Lakes and moors, orchards and meadows dominate the landscape, where storks also feel very much at home. The pace of life is a little slower and less hectic here which is exemplified by the Warthausen-Ochsenhausen narrow gauge railway, which is lovingly called "Öchsle".
The Danube-Lake Constance-Cycle Path opens up the regions of Upper Swabia and the Allgäu for cyclists. In reality the Path is made up of two separate routes; an eastern route and a western one, the ends of which are in Ulm and Friedrichshafen which lend themselves to being connected up to form a circular route. Ulm is a pulsing metropolis which is world famous for its cathedral. The northern shore of Lake Constance is an attractive destination for a cycling holiday; cyclists have perfect bathing opportunities or can just relax in one of the numerous lakeside cafes. Returning to Upper Swabia: the numerous spa and bathing places attest to the fact that the area is a major spa and wellness centre. Therapeutic moor waters and thermal springs are the prerequisites which occur naturally in the area. As early as the Early Stone Age, people settled here in lake dwellings and later the area belonged to the Duchy of Swabia. Later still the region came within the Swabian Austria region and numerous religious territories which can still be recognised today due to the remaining impressive castles and monasteries. The boom in construction which occurred in the area during the Counter- reformation resulted in the region being known as “Baroque” Upper Swabia.
Linzgau is very rural in character, and is divided into southern and northern parts by a steep escarpment. In Pfullendorf and Markdorf visitors can still see the signs of their pasts as free imperial towns. The cultural highlights of the trip are the castles in Salem and Heiligenberg. A circumnavigation of Lake Constance and the spectacular Danube breakthrough between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen can be easily added onto this trip. The former Zollern Residence offers yet another highlight in the region between the Danube and Lake Constance.
As you can see, there is a lot to discover along the Danube-Lake Constance Cycle Path. Why not visit this beautiful holiday region? We look forward to welcoming you!
